Spotlight Q&A: Daishon Spann

As an athlete only in the 8th grade, Daishon Spann has multiple national championships not only in the 800m, but the 400m as well. This lady is an all around athlete and competes in the 100mh, high jump, 200m, 400m and the 800m. She also competes in a few multi events during the summer.

Daishon Spann plans to finish her 8th grade season with a bang, and the first stop is Middle School State. In the beginning of the middle school season, Spann was ranked in the top 10 in both the 400m and 200m, and had the #1 times in both the 800m and 100h. With the big day being tomorrow Spann still seems to be in the top 10 in all her events. This weekend Spann will be running the 4x800m, the 4x400m as well as the 800m and the 100mh.

Being her last and first year with Lauderdale Lakes middle school, her high scoring points could be the difference from them repeating 2nd place, and winning the Middle School State Championship. Lauderdale Lakes lost the state championship by 1.5 points last year, and it came down to the 4x800m. This year Lauderdale Lakes has a highly favored shot and winning with the addition f not only Daishon Spann, but also her 7th grade sister Dominique Spann who will be running 1500m and 800m as well as the relays with her sister.

Spann has a great chance to break the record in the 800m as the state record is 2:17. In the girls 800m there are 7 girls that can go under 2:20. It's going to be a battle between Jatana Folston, Sierra Oliveria and Daishon.

I got to speak with my sister before she left for middle school state this morning here's what we talked about:

Do you think your team has a strong chance of winning the state championship?

We do have a strong chance of winning, we have a strong team and we all have the same goals.

What are you goals for your events this weekend?

I want to do my best. In the 800m I want to run at least 2:16 and run 15 in the 100mh.

How do you feel to know that you'll be running with Jatana Folston, who's been running a lot of high school meets as well as running some pretty fast times?

I've ran against her before and we push each other when we run. When it's time to race were competitors, but were still friends after.

Are you impressed with how far you've come in one year with the hurdles?

When I first started I didn't like it, and I was really uncoordinated. When I did it at clubs for the pentathlon I started to like and now I love it!

Is there any race that you want to watch, or anyone you want to see run?

I want to see Danielle Bess run the 400m against Jantaijah Ford.

Make sure you tune in tomorrow and watch the Middle School state meet LIVE! These races are only to happen once and they'll be the best middle school races of this entire season.
