New England Outdoor Track Championship Preview

Field Events | Running Events

Boys Pole Vault

The vault should be very competitive with 10 athletes over 14-0. Leading the way, fresh off his 15-0 clearance at the CT championships is Amity senior, Cole Crotta. Look for MA champ Tom Gauger (Billerica HS) & MA runner-up Mark Vetere (Andover) along with 3 other CT vaulters who cleared 14-6, Paul Chandler (Staples HS), Nelson Laskowski (Woodstock HS), & Cory Calamari (Fitch HS).

Girls Long Jump

With 6 girls jumping over 18’0 at there state meets this will be a tightly contested event. The chance of a meet record is good as #1 seed and defending NE Champion, Deanna Latham (Triton Regional HS, MA) comes in with a leap of 19-4.5, which is 2” better than the existing meet record. Others to watch are Kim Carderio (Falmouth HS, MA), Whitney Holder (Middletown HS, CT) & Becky Stoyle (Pembroke HS, MA)

Girls Discus

#1 seed Kelly Allen (Norton HS, MA) has almost 17ft on the rest of the field, with her throw of 140-7. The best competition may be the battle for a scoring position, as there are 6 other girls over 120-0. Look for Georgia Boisse (Massabesic HS, ME) & Amy Desrosiers (Salem HS, NH) to be right there if Allen falters.

Boys Javelin

This event is up grabs as there are any number of athlete that could take the title. There are 10 athletes entered who have thrown over 180 ft, along with 5 who have thrown over 190 ft. #1 seed is Justin Siekierski (Minnechaug HS, MA) with a throw of 195-11. Kyle Quinn (Somerset HS, MA), Nicholas Keeling (Ponaganset HS, RI), Stephen Simalchik (Danbury HS, CT) & Ben Lincoln (Hingham HS, MA) all come in with throws over 190ft.

Boys High Jump

8 jumpers come in having cleared 6-6. #1 seed is indoor champion Corey Thomas (BC HS, MA) who cleared 6-11 to win the MA championship. Look for Trent Baltzell (Sutton HS, MA) & NH champ Keith Lewis (Nashua South HS, NH) to challenge. MA comes in with 4 of the top 5 seeds.

Boys Shot Put

6 athletes have come in the competition having thrown over 56 ft. Maine champion, Dan Smith (Thornton Academy, ME) comes in as the #1 seed, breaking the 60 ft barrier for the first time last week to set an all time record in Maine. Indoor champion Dan Glavin will try to repeat his success. Watch out for MA champ, Sam Bombaugh (Falmouth HS, MA) and NH champion Brett Sanchez (Winnacunnet HS, NH) to challenge as well.

Boys Long Jump

The top 6 seeds all come from MA, all having jumped over 22-4. This competition looks to be a repeat of the MA all state meet. #1 seed Sam Arsenault (Newton North HS, NMA) is the only jumper seeded over 23 ft. Look for runner-up Josh Adams (Meuthen HS, MA) & Jackson Macdonald (Hamilton Wen. HS, MA) to challenge as well. Indoor champion Jamie Ruginski (Bonny Eagle HS, ME) is entered as well and will be looking to add the outdoor title.

Girls Pole Vault

The girl’s pole vault promises to be a good competition, with 5 girls with clearances over 11-6. The meet record of 12-0 is in danger as both #1 seed Jillena DeCarteret (Narragansett HS, MA) 12-2 & #2 seed CT champ, Kim Johnson (Norwich Free Academy, CT) 12-0 have jumps better or equal to it.

Girls Javelin

The top 6 come in separated by just over 5ft. This is event that is surely up for grabs.#1 seed is MA champ Stefanie Danehy (Medway HS, MA) who has a best of 133-10. NH champ Krista Vincent (Somersworth HS, NH) & Sam Otten (Ashland HS, MA) also come in seeded with throws over 130 ft.

Girls High Jump

15 girls are seeded with a clearance of 5-4 or higher, which should make for a tight competition. The top three seeds Kristen McDonagh (Mansfield HS, MA), Ronea Saunders (Lyman Hall HS, CT) & Moira Cronin (Andover HS, MA) all come in with clearances of 5-6, the title is up for grabs.

Girls Shot Put

CT champion Rachel Aliotta (Cheshire HS, CT) comes in as the #1 seed, 44-3. She should be challenged by the top three MA throwers, Emmaline Berg (Holliston HS, MA), Kirsten Orrell (Millbury HS, MA) & Kelly McCabe (Mansfield HS, MA) who all threw over 41 ft at the MA all-state meet.

Girls Triple Jump

The girls triple jump will have MA champ Nadia Eke (Holy Name HS, MA) looking to take down the rest of the competition. If anyone is to challenge Eke, look for CT champ Brooke Johnson (Torringotn HS, CT) or Berkeley Hall (Pembroke HS, MA) to step up.

Boys Discus

The discus features 9 throwers who have broken the 161 ft barrier. The top 3 should wage a good battle with MA champion Andrew Tallman (BC HS, MA) the #1 seed with 178-0 ft, he will pushed by NH champ Brett Sanchez (Winnacunnet HS, NH) & ME champion and last year’s runner-up Dan Smith (Thornton Academy, ME). Another to watch is defending champion Justin Siekierski (Minnechaug HS, MA) who comes in seeded #5.

The triple jump features 5 jumpers who have jumped over 45 ft at their state meets. #1 seed is CT champ Tyler Murphy (Wethersfiled HS, CT), chasing him will be RI champ, Craig Amado (Central HS, RI), along with MA champ Tom Donovan (Holliston HS, MA)

Running Events

Girls 4x800

Distance power LaSalle Academy, RI comes in with a seed time 10+ seconds better than the #2 seed. There seed time of 9:15.67 is within 3 seconds of the meet record. If they are to falter look for Franklin HS, MA or Norwich Free Academy, CT to mount a challenge.

 Boys 4x800

This race should be very close throughout with 7 teams entered with sub 8 credentials. Hamden HS, CT is the #1 seed with a 7:53.95; they will be challenged by RI champion Westerly HS, who features Andrew Springer on anchor. MA champ Newton South will be in contention as well, with MA runner-up St. John Prep right there too.Other teams to watch are CT powers Glastonbury & Danbury.

 Girls 100 Hurdles

The hurdles should be a great race between CT champ Lauren Ventrella (Norwalk HS, CT) & MA champion Meghan Ferreira (Mansfield HS, MA) who are separated by just .05 seconds. If they falter look for Maine champion Chelsey Tewell (York HS, ME) or Deanna Latham (Triton Regional HS, MA) to challenge. Latham is the top seed in the long jump as well.

 Boys 110 Hurdles

#1 seed Corey Thomas (BC HS, MA) will look to add the 110 hurdle title to the 55m title he won this winter. Thomas is also the #1 seed in the high jump. If anyone is to challenge him look for CT champ Rodrigo Souza (Old Saybrook HS,CT) or Jonathan Gomes (new Beford HS, MA) to be right there.

 Girls 100m Dash

The girls 100m could be a head to head battle between CT champ Teyanna Green (Danbury HS, CT) & MA champ Jen Christian (Springfield Cent. HS, MA) who come in with seed times under 12.2.  Green’s teammates Charisma Green along with Molly O’Dea (Hingham HS MA) & Santina Williams (A.I. Prince, CT) also have a shot at the top spot.

 Boys 100m Dash

The top four seeds are separated by just .12, so it’s really anyone’s race. Top seed is CT champion Jonathan Gentle (Bloomfield HS, CT). Marcus Wright (Cheshire HS, CT) the runner-up to Gentle is the #2 seed. Indoor 55m champ Christopher McConnell is the #4 seed after getting upset by Walpole’s Vinnie Lee at the MA all-state meet.

 Girls 1600m

This race has the potential to be blazing fast as 10 girls come in with seed times under 4:58, led by MA champion Kirsten Kasper (North Andover HS, MA) who blitzed to a 4:47.47 at the All-state meet, the meet record of 4:47.3h which has stood since 1985 could be broken. Coincidentally the record is held by a Vermonter, Eileen Ellig (Rutland HS). Any number of girls could end up on the podium including MA runner-up Camille Murphy (Framingham HS, MA), NH champ Rachel Schneider (St. Thomas Aquinos, NH). Indoor champ Jenna Davidner (Oliver Ames HS, MA) is the #4 seed and shouldn’t be overlooked. ME champ Abbey Leonardi is just a freshman but will be looking to make a statement as she has run un-pushed all season.

Boys 1600m

Andrew Springer (Westerly HS, RI) would be the clear favorite in this race. Springer who won the NIN mile title this winter comes in with the fastest time of anyone in the field, however Springer has opted to go to run in the Mid West Distance Gala in Illinois. With Springer out the race is wide open.  MA state champ, John Gregorek (Seekonk HS, MA) rolled to a 4:13.70 at the All-State meet; also look for Nick Ross (East Greenwich HS, RI) along with CT 3rd place finisher John Raneri (New Fairfield HS, CT) to make a run at it.

Girls 4x100

The girls 4x100 looks to be two team race to the finish line between RI champ (HOPE HS) and MA champ (North Attleboro HS) who come in with seeds time just .02 apart. Crisp baton passing is going to be the key to the victor. The meet record set just last year by Danbury could be challenged (47.36).

Boys 4x100

The boys race is up for grabs as anyone of four teams could take the top spot. CT champ Norte Dame has the top seed time of 42.92, the only team under 43 seconds. There are 3 more teams CT runner-up Masuk HS, New Britain HS, CT, & MA champion Lawrence within .02 of each other.

Girls 400m

CT champ Symone Roberts (New Britain HS, CT) is the favorite to take the 400m title. Roberts dominated the CT all-state meet and has a time 1.3 seconds better than #2 seed Emily Broyles (Mansfield HS, MA). Freshman Santina Williams (A.I. Prince, CT) & Maya Walton (Danbury HS, CT) also could challenge.

Boys 400m

With 6 boys under 49 seconds and New England record holder Daundre Barnaby on the sidelines due to a false start in the CT state meet, this race is wide open. Robert White (New Britain HS, CT) is the #1 seed with a 48.43 clocking. CT runner-up Jacob DeValve (Manchester HS, CT), MA champ Emmanuel Jean (Randolph, MA), Matthew Marriott (Staples HS, CT), Kenny Olivieri (West Warwick HS, RI) & Matthew Lyons (Wethersfield HS, CT) all should be in contention.

Girls 300m Hurdles

With the top three seeds closely bunched this should be a great race. #1 seed is Lauren Ventrella, who is also the #1 seed in the 100m hurdles, she has a seed time of 44.61, closely behind her is the CT runner-up Monica Yanez (West Haven HS, CT) who will be looking to avenge her loss to Ventrella. Also look for RI champ Emily Barrett (LaSalle Academy, RI) to challenge for the win.

Boys 300m Hurdles

MA champ Davis VanOpdorp (Winchester HS, MA) has the top seed 38.60, he will pursued by NH champ Keith Lewis (Nashua South HS, NH), MA runner-up Paul Kelley (Hopkinton HS, MA) & defending champion Jamie Ruginski (Bonny Eagle HS, ME). Ruginski was a surprise winner last spring coming from the 2nd fastest heat to win the title; he added the indoor long jump title this pat winter as well.

 Girls 800m

This will be one of the featured races of the meet, and a rematch of the NH meet of Champions. #1 seed Grace Rodriguez (Hanover HS, NH) avenged a loss at the state winning last week with a fine 2:12.01 clocking. She will be closely followed by teammates Kaitlyn D’Orazio & Rachel Schneider of (St. Thomas Aquinas, NH).

Boys 800m

The 800m will be missing top New England runner Cas Loxsom, who won the CT championship in a state record on Monday. In his absence, MA champ Nick Wade (North Attleboro HS, MA) is the top seed by almost 2 seconds, he will be chased by MA runner-up Pat Egan (Whitman-Hanson HS, MA) and the rest of the field.

 Girls 200m

Top seed is MA champ Hannah Janeczak (Doherty HS, MA) comes in with the only time under 25 seconds, with her 24.80 clocking. She will be chased by MA runner-up and freshman Selana Yates (Holyoke HS, MA), Jasmine Marrow the RI champ from HOPE, HS, CT champ Symone Roberts (New Britain HS, CT).

 Boys 200m

#1 seed Evan White (Tewksbury HS, MA) comes in with one of the two seed times under 22 seconds. White will be challenged by MA runner-up Francesco Cuesta (Lawrence HS, MA) who will be looking to avenge his defeat. Look for CT champ Jonathan Gentle (Bloomfield HS, CT) to be ready to challenge as well.

 Girls 3200m

Meet record holder Emily Jones has opted to rest, so the race is wide open. #1 seed is CT champ Caroline McDonough (Darien HS, CT), she will be closely pursued by Meg Ryan (Fairfield, CT) along with Kristen Veit (Holyoke Catholic HS, MA) & Sarah Eagan (Norwich Free Academy, CT) who all come in with seed times under 11 minutes.

Boys 3200m

This race is wide open with any of number of athletes capable of pulling off the victory. MA champ Coby Horowitz (Nashoba HS, MA) is the #1 seed, coming in with a time of 9:13.67. Behind him there are 5 others under 9:20. Look for Jeff Bush (Westborough HS, MA), Patrick McGowan (Mansfield HS, MA) & Adam Trofa (Amity HS, CT) to be in the front pack.

 Girls 4x400

Danbury, CT the defending champions will be chasing the meet record of 3:51.93, they will pushed by Mansfield HS, MA as there seed times are just .19 seconds apart. If these two teams go after it the meet record is in danger as they each won there state meets by 4+ seconds each, the added competition will only help.

 Boys 4x400

The top three seeds are closely bunched, with less than a second between them. This should make for an exciting finish coming down the home stretch. #1 seed Andover MA will look to take down A.I. Prince Technology HS, CT & Staples HS, CT. If these teams falter there will be plenty hungry to get a podium spot.
