Sorensen, Young Soar to Performers of the Week

Boys Performer

John Sorensen wins the fan vote for the Florida boys performer of the week.

The Fernandina Beach senior had his opening race at the Jekyll Island Invitational in up in Georgia this past week.

Running a time of 16:35, Sorensen was three seconds faster at the same meet compared to last year. Sorensen is quite consistent in his performances season after season, year after year.

This past track season he bettered his 1600m and 3200m PRs to 4:32 and 9:49. Last cross country season he finished off states with a 5k PR of 16:23.

Sorenson is only 12 seconds away from his PR at the start of his senior season in early September.

The Fernandina Beach squad is led by Sorenson along with sophomores, Steven Durr and Caden Kwiatkowski, and fellow senior, Riley Dean.

Sorensen's 16:35 performance puts him at #25 for HS boys across all classifications and #11 for 2A boys. In a highly competitive classification, it will be fun to watch Sorensen as he has the potential to soar in the rankings and continue to be amongst the best in the state.

Girls Performer:

Cheyenne Young is the fan vote winner for the Florida girls performer of the week.

The Cape Coral senior won the DDD Sommer Invitational this past week running a time of 18:28. Young opened up her season at the Lemon Bay Invitational the week prior with a time of 19:19.

What is truly inspiring about Young, is the improvements she made from her 2017 cross country season to her 2018 track season.

Young went from running consistently 20:40s in the 5k across multiple course terrains in the fall of 2017, to running a PR in the 3200m of 11:19 just short of six months later. Week after week in her 2018 track season she would chip off time going from 11:42 at the start of the season down to 11:19 at the region meet.

The Cape Coral ladies will compete this weekend at the Fort Myers Invitational, where they will race many of the same teams as the previous week. This will make for a very exciting invitational to watch out for.
