Ruginski & Grigware lead Mainers to strong day at New Englands Jun 14, 2009

Bonny Eagle senior Jamie Ruginski ended his high school track career with three podium finishes at the 46th New England Championships in Burlington, VT. Ruginski took top honors in the long jump, with his leap of 22-2 3/4", this was Jamie's 3rd New England title to go along with the 300m Hurdles from last spring and the indoor long jump title from this winter. Despite having graduated on Friday evening, and then attending project graduation before leaving at 5:30am to come to the meet, Ruginski would also finish 3rd in the 300m hurdles, with a personal best and then on his final jump in the triple jump moved up to 2nd overall and a lifetime best 46-2 jump. On the girls side, sophomore Keila Grigware (Biddeford) stole the show in the javelin. Grigware a surprise champion at last week Class A state championship meet, once again had a huge pr throw of 137-10 to win the New England title. In her first season on track, she reached the top right away. Her story is quite amazing though, her pr before last week was 112', she improved that at the state meet to 122'1. She added another 15 ft to her personal best on Saturday. Grigware knew she was going to have a good meet, when she threw over 130' during a warmup. "I was kind of freaking out after the warmup throw, I had never thrown that far."- Grigware would say after the meet. To add 25ft in just two weeks isiguring the event out. When asked what the key was to throwing so far, Keila would say "my coaches shortened my run up and that has helped a ton." Her throw also was an all-time state record. 4 all-time state bests Dan Smith (Thornton Academy) breaks his own record with a throw of 60-6 1/4" Kelia Grigware (Biddeford) smashes record by 8ft+ 137-10 Abbey Leonardi (Kennebunk) breaks her own record, clocking 4:54.14 Scarborough Girls 4x400 (Rachelle Greene, Nicole Kirk, Whitney Chamberlain, & Abby Chick) at it again, smash the week old record they set, by becoming first team under 4:00 in Maine history, 3:58.44 Maine All-New England Athletes   1st place: Jamie Ruginski (Bonny Eagle) Long jump 22-2 1/2" 1st place: Keila Grigware (Biddeford) Javelin 137-10 2nd place: Dan Smith (Thornton Academy) Shot put 60-6 1/4" 2nd place: Jamie Ruginski (Bonny Eagle) Triple jump 46-2 2nd place: Chris Fogler (John Bapst) 300m Hurdles 38.26 3rd place: Abbey Leonardi (Kennebunk) 1600m 4:54.12 3rd place: Jamie Ruginski (Bonny Eagle) 300m hurdles 38.76 3rd place: Cheverus 4x800(Taylor Dundas, Jack Terwilliger, Josh Reali, Andrew Snyder) 7:54.03 3rd place: York Girls 4x100m(Stephanie Lomasney, Danielle Clements, Emily Mitchell, Chelsey Tewell) 49.49 3rd place: Mike Slovenski (Brunswick) pole vault 14-9 3rd place: Georgia Boisse (Massabesic) Discus 118-7 4th place: Alli-Sue Fereshitian (Leavitt) 110m hurdles 14.81 4th place: Emily Durgin (Bonny Eagle) 3200m 10:57.85   4th place: Dan Smith (Thornton Academy) Discus 163-10 5th place: Deanna Wilbur (Bangor) 300m Hurdles 45.15 5th place: Brad Nakanishi (Scarborough) pole vault 14-3 5th place: Mark McCauley (Greely) 800m 1:55.83 5th place: Christy Manning (Scarborough) Discus 117-1 6th place: Nate Hathaway (Scarborough) 1600m 4:16.95 6th place: Tommy Winger (Falmouth) Long jump 21-7       Photo Gallery now available --more pictures to come Click headline to read full recap
